This Month’s pick is the exhibition at the Lewisham Art House, which is a solo show from artist Duval Timothy entitled ARE NA FO. The show features new video, sculpture and paintings, which promises to be colourful, bold and featuring strong geometric forms.

The title ARE NA FO has been lifted from the phrase ‘OF AN ERA,’ which was used to describe the work of artist Blinky Palermo, a heavy influence on Duval. The phrase was used in reference to Palermo’s forward thinking when it came to the problematic modernist approach of creating a sensation affect for the viewer in their paintings.

Duval’s new works investigate colour, context and function and movement in the traditional sense of painting. However Duval juxtaposes it through his use of different materials, which raise new ideas about the use of colour outside the boundaries of painting. So the title and reference to artist Blinky Palermo seems rather fitting, as within Duval’s work he hints at historical ideas of the modern but brings them into an contemporary context.

Duval Timothy studied at Central Saint Martins and also at Beaux Arts, Paris. A book publication of past works is available to buy from the gallery.

This month, the featured venue is APT Gallery. A stalwart of the Deptford Galleries scene, APT has an intriguing story to tell. APT was set up in 1995, in the Old Harold Works. A group of artists worked together to secure funding for this project, with an aim to build a gallery space and 37 affordable studio spaces. It worked and now the gallery operates from its character-full site by Deptford Creek.
